Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a teacher in a low-income, inner-city school region with a large, diverse population. Most of my students are first-generation Americans or immigrant children from a variety of South American countries. My students are faced with many challenges, both in and out of the classroom. Throughout the school year, it is our goal to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion of all! Our school is a Title I school, which means a school with large concentrations of low-income students.

Many students in our school qualify and enter our school through the Head Start Program, which is available for children who are from families with incomes below the poverty guidelines, children from homeless families, and/or families receiving public assistance.

Some of the students in my classes are special needs students who suffer from attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), are ESL students (English as a second language), and/or have other types of special needs. Regardless of their challenges though, the majority of the students are very determined and eager to succeed. In spite of their personal experiences, most of my students are very active, enthusiastic learners who possess a thirst for knowledge.

My Project

It is my goal for my students, many of which are students with diverse special needs and come from a low income community to develop financial literacy skills. After discussing the importance of earning, investing, and saving, our kiddos will have the opportunity to earn classroom money for things such as performing their class jobs, attending school on a daily basis, doing their homework, performing acts of kindness, and going above and beyond while meeting academic expectations. They will access the classroom online bank using our existing iPad with requested protective case and will be given time to deposit and withdraw play money earned from their accounts. We will then establish a classroom store stocked and supplied with the requested snacks (which will satisfy their rumbly tumbly between meals) as well as an iPad case for our existing iPad to help maintain a safe and healthy classroom environment. Every week, the students will take turns running the classroom store while their classmates shop with the money they have earned. The students will use the money saved to purchase/invest in items such as existing basic supplies and requested snacks. The students will build their knowledge of financial literacy and strengthen their math skills by using online bank accounts and the requested iPad case to safely house our existing iPad. They will print out account information and create a journal with financial data.

It is my hope that by engaging in this financial literacy unit of study, my students will learn the importance of earning, investing, and saving money.
