Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal.
I work at John O'Connell High School in the Mission District of San Francisco. My school is approximately 85% Latino and we are a low performing and low socio-economic status campus. On any given day I teach 150 students. Many of my students come under-prepared due to lack of money and resources. Many of my students use "pocket binders"--meaning they do not have backpacks or binders and their papers end up crammed in their pockets and transported back and forth to school each day. You can only imagine the state of these papers and just how frequently they get lost. The "pocket binder" kids don't have room to shove that pencil or pen in there, and trust me they aren't carrying around glue sticks or binders. I have already given out a few binders to students and it honestly makes a world of difference. The general philosophy is that "Organization is key."
I propose that my ten most needy students be provided a backpack, pencils, pens, notebook paper, a binder, dividers, and a glue stick. I will present your gifts of backpacks and materials to these ten students and take their photographs. The experience I want my students to gain from this is how it feels to be professional, organized and clean. If a student has the opportunity to feel professional, he or she will act that way.
Please consider my students in your donation process, they truly need the materials to be successful in high school. They will all write you Thank You letters and mean it! Thank you!
P.S. The backpacks cannot and will not be red or blue due to gang affiliations.
