Sixth graders: adolescents who are growing into their teens, facing new challenges each and every day. Students who would rather be ANYWHERE than in the classroom learning about character analysis and inferences. And the thought of sitting for even a few minutes on hard, uncomfortable chairs does not bode well.
My school has a wonderfully diverse population, including a large group of refugees, who make up more than 50% of those in my classrooms.
I would like the opportunity to provide comfortable, colorful, and flexible seating for my students by purchasing cushions that will be used not only on the hard, bum-numbing student chairs, but also wherever the child chooses to work: on the floor, in the common's area outside our room, in small literacy groups.
Student chairs and desks have not changed in comfort since I was a child. Today's children need to be comfortable in order for true engagement and learning to occur. Whether during assessments or small group literacy gatherings, students will be able to have a cushion to sit upon, to lean against, or to rest an elbow on while reading.
I want to provide opportunity that allows students to be comfortable no matter where they choose to engage their learning, whether it be at their desk or elsewhere.
By purchasing 36 navy (our school colors) Memory Foam Seat Cushions, all students will be able to ensure that they will not have numb bums!
