Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten students at a Title 1 school. My students all come with varying background experiences. Some come knowing how to read while others are just learning their letters. Some come with all supplies and then some, while others come with nothing. We laugh, learn, and explore together each day, becoming a family as the year goes on. We create our own special classroom community.
My students are eager to learn and ready to take on the challenges of kindergarten.
Those challenges don't always come in the form of a curriculum and that is what makes kindergarten so fun and exciting! The exploration that we do allows students to shine in ways they never imagined.
My Project
Kindergarteners love to play and so much of that play time has been removed from the curriculum! Have you been in a kindergarten classroom lately? Gone are the days of nap time, play centers, and arts and crafts. So much of the play has been removed from their day. Last year I replaced traditional morning work with hands-on bins. The bins allowed the students to create and "play" in ways that the curriculum didn't allow for. It let kids shine in a new way.
By funding our hands-on bins, you are giving my kindergarteners a chance to be creative, build, and explore.
Students will be able to start their day by getting their brains going in a different way. Instead of coming in and getting a worksheet in the morning, students will choose a bin containing Playstix, Waffle Builders, Slot-A-Shape Builders, etc. and have time to explore and build with the materials in a small group. They will be practicing the life-long skills of collaboration, problem solving, and critical thinking. They won't get excited by another worksheet, but they will with the materials that I am hoping to provide them with!
