Our school is an academically successful, rural high school that is filled to the brim with about 900 wonderful students. At our school, we serve our military community by educating students whose parents serve or work at the USMC and Naval facilities at Camp Lejeune or Cherry Point, the two Coast Guard stations, and/or Bogue Air Field. I teach many students across all grade levels in my band classes as well as after-school music and performing arts programs.
Last fall, our school and community sustained significant damage from Hurricane Florence.
Many of my students are currently displaced from their homes and lost many personal belongings in the storm.
In the state's ranking system, our high-performing high school has been ranked as a top ten public high school in NC for ten consecutive years. Through our state's report card system, we have been given an "A+" designation four years in a row.
We sustain a rich history of high-quality musical productions, receiving the highest ratings at state adjudications annually. The support we receive directly correlates to that success.
Even with our high achievement and growth, we are still striving to make an improvement. There's always something we can do to progress.
My Project
This Fall, our gong was damaged during transit from a marching band contest. A small crack developed and spread into a much larger problem. The gong is now unplayable.
Much of our literature utilizes the gong as an important texture to support the music, without a functioning gong, my students cannot perform certain pieces of music to their fullest extent.
This replacement gong would be used in rehearsals and for concerts and marching band/indoor percussion activities throughout the school year. Many students are assigned the gong as their instrument throughout the year and having a high-quality instrument to them is very important.
