My students need 2 copies of "Bullying in Schools," and other books about bullying to be read to the class, plus The Magic School Bus Science Chapter Books, a set of Amber Brown stories, and A to Z Mysteries.
How do you keep children from turning on each other? You make sure that each child feels good about his or her self. That is what I am trying to do with my students.
I teach in an amazing kind of classroom called an "inclusion class." The purpose of the class is that everyone gets the support that he or she needs.
My students are a mix of general education students and students with special needs. I teach a third grade class in a very urban neighborhood where nearly all of the students are reading below grade-level, and books are not a priority in many homes.
My Project
I am requesting some wonderful books! Many of the books focus on bullying. They range from nonfiction ("Jungle Bullies") to realistic fiction ("Bullying in Schools") to fantasy books that have animal characters dealing with bullies. These books will help to open up discussion in the classroom. I am also requesting high-interest series books at different levels. When students are able to read books at their own level then the reading is focused on the story, rather than the length of the books.
These books can make a real difference in my classroom.
They will help my students to learn about how important it is to respect each other and not bully. They will also enable all of my students to have access to books at their reading level, which will help to build their self-confidence.
