Have you ever felt scared, intimidated, or left out? Perhaps someone has said or done something that has even made you feel worthless or unloved. School should be a wonderful experience. But for some, it is the place where they are teased by their peers, ignored, or even abused. This must stop.
I feel fortunate everyday to teach the greatest group of 6th graders around.
These kids are smart and sincere. However, they are all facing challenges in their own lives, so it is extremely important that, when they come to school, they know with certainty that they are safe. Some are facing financial problems, divorce, uncertain family lives, and the loss of loved ones. They HAVE to have a place where they are loved and accepted by all. I am passionate about creating an environment in which students are kind to one another, and are accepting of one another. My hope is that they will carry on these behaviors beyond 6th grade, and actually make a difference in the world they live in.
My Project
I have requested a classroom set of two books: "Bullying in Schools" and "Cyber Bullying." I have also requested a "Bully Free Zone Kit" which includes tips for dealing with bullies. These tools will help arm my students with the tools they will need to manage the bullies in their lives.
Building confidence in our youth is extremely important in helping to shape them into the wonderful individuals that they are going to become.
Bullies cannot be allowed to tear others down, or to replace hope with fear and anger. The changes we wish to see in the world, begin with today's youth. We can teach them and they will make a difference.
