Walk into our classroom about 8:45 on any given day and here's what you would see.....students relaxing on the floor immersed in the action of the book in their hand, a couple of children browsing book shelves to fill their book box, or a boy drawing and labeling an animal he is researching using a non-fiction book. We have created a reading community where children learn about themselves, their world, and stretch their thinking through reading.
Our school, located in the East Tennessee mountains, has nearly 400 students who come to school ready to learn.
Many would rather be at school than at home, where they feel safe, receive hot meals, and are supported by caring adults. I strive to create a feeling of security in a warm, stable learning classroom environment. Our school supports a special education preschool, provides mentors to students for extra support, offers basic dental services, and provides weekend food bags. Children have many after school opportunities including academic tutoring, Girls on the Run, Boys on Bikes, Genius Hour, and Coalition for Kids.
Our elementary school provides opportunities to develop the whole child so that they may thrive academically, socially, behaviorally, and physically.
My Project
We are a part of a grass-roots initiative called ProjectLitCommunity whose purpose is to get good books into the hands of children. The book sets being requested are NOT boring and children will love reading them at our after school book club. Research shows that children who read and discuss books with peers, are more likely to continue to read on their own.
When children have access to good quality books in which they can see themselves, it enhances their love of reading and the desire to keep on reading!
By providing the funding for these book sets, you will be supporting our newly formed school book club and give upper elementary students the opportunity to read top quality novels.
