My students range in age from four to eleven and vary in ethnicity. They are small town diamonds in the rough and they are shining brighter every day. They are smart, talented, creative, imaginative and hard working. Many have overcome the obstacles associated with poverty and they are becoming outstanding leaders. They help each other and their teachers. These students are becoming strong, dependable people. These students will someday lead our nation. I am blessed to be able to have the opportunity to teach them art.
My Project
Art is a subject that has sadly been woefully neglected in our elementary school for nearly twenty years. So many students who could have excelled at this subject went without any art instruction at all and therefore were not given the chance to shine. However things are changing for the better and I have been given the opportunity to teach art to our young people. I believe that this will benefit these students in so many ways. Art has been known to foster imagination, inspire creativity and improve critical thinking skills, not to mention help with raising test scores. Art also helps with dexterity and fine motor skills. Students are soaking this up! They love just the little bit that we have been able to accomplish! I can already see more self confidence and a sense of well being in my students. The paints, brushes, colored pencils and markers will give the students a chance to try various mediums. The paper stumps will help them with shading and adding depth to their drawings. Being able to use these different materials will help them find their niche in art!
