Help me give my students Fraction Tower Linking Cubes! Fractions are such an abstract skill for students to learn. These linking cubes will provide them with a concrete manipulative to move around during the lesson.
As a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school, my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the hurdles they face, I am always impressed by their drive and motivation to succeed.
My students are intelligent, kind and curious.
They like to move, they love books and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
The Fraction Tower Linking Cubes work amazing for giving students the "why" fractions are the way the are! So often students are confused about what a fraction is and how to add/subrtract fractions, find equivalent fractions, simplify fractions, convert improper to mixed numbers, etc. These Fraction Tower Linking Cubes allow the students to physically work through fraction problems. By doing this, they walk away with such a solid understanding of fractions. Our current fraction unit takes almost two months to get through and I can use them in almost every lesson! It's extremely important for students to be able to move things around, write, and explore as they're learning. Please help my students get these manipulative to learn in a more hands-on way! They would be put to such great use!
