No Copier for School of 1000 in Harlem

My school of 1000 students in Harlem has been without a copier for over a month. Our copier (which the school has had for years) broke down in early December and it still has not been replaced over a month later. Every time I ask about whether a new copier will be bought, the school says that there is no money and that it will most likely not be replaced at all. I know that I am asking for a very expensive thing, which is why I hestitate to ask at all. But please imagine what it is like to try to teach in one of the toughest schools and not even have a copier. Teachers have been spending their own money to make copies at Staples. Not not only is that costly to the teachers at my school (who are already exhausted and discouraged), it is inconvenient and time-consuming. I want my students to have all the opportunities they can to succeed. They are so smart and so talented. But their potential is constantly undermined by a lack of supplies in my school. How can I teach them math when I can't even photocopy homework and tests? How can I help them feel like successful mathematicians who have the potential to be Nobel Prize winners (because it's true, they do have that potential) when I can't even photocopy the material that would help them apply the math topics they are learning? I am not the only teacher who is crippled by this problem. Every teacher has had to find a way to live without a copier. And that means that every student has to work that much harder-- to overcome not only the daily obstacles of their home lives, but also the lack of resources that their school has available to them. I know that a copier is expensive. I know that it is a lot to ask. But I thought that maybe someone would read this and understand that I only ask because we are in such great need. I chose a copier that could handle a lot of copies so that it will last several years. I also requested toner because my school always delays in replacing the toner when it runs out. If you fund this proposal, you will help not only myself, but the many struggling teachers at my school who deeply believe that our students are capable, but are discouraged by our lack of supplies.
