Mr. Smith from Sandia Park NM is requesting Supplies through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

No Child Left Inside

My students need 6 sets of seeds to create a garden for wildlife and 2 sets of books to learn about great scientists.

Twelve of my students have the opportunity to spend the last two weeks of the school year in a "Discovery Project" at Wildlife West Nature Park in Edgewood, New Mexico. Based loosely on the book, "Last Child In The Woods", they will spend their time immersed in nature and completely unplugged from technology. "No cell phones, no Ipods, no video games...not a single luxury..." Okay, it's not quite Gilligan's Island, but Wildlife West Nature Park is a zoo located on 120 acres that contains non-releasable animals such as deer, elk, wolves, bear, etc. One of their largest expenses is to feed the animals and my students will be building sustainable gardens to help in this effort. They will be learning complex relationships between plants, herbivores, and carnivores. In addition, they will get to build a bear habitat for Koshari, a black bear. While they have some downtime during the day and during an overnight camping experience in the park, we will be reading about some of the great scientific minds throughout history. To accomplish this project, my students will need seed sets to grow foods appropriate for the wildlife at the park, a set of books about the greatest minds in Science to read while on location, and an environmental science activity book to plan projects for the wildlife park.
