My students need quality literature about bullies, soft seats, clipboards, writing journals, and multicultural crayons to learn and problem solve about stopping bullying.
No Bullying Allowed! Help us develop a classroom environment where kids feel safe and accepted. During class discussions, students will work as a team to create ways to stop a bully. This project will help students develop empathy for each other during the one on one journal sharing.
My students come from a multicultural and high-poverty community in a suburb of a large city.
They attend a smaller neighborhood school. Several of my students come to school needing guidance in being respectful to themselves and others. Since they are only five or six years old, they need the correct environment to develop empathy for others. My students come to school eager to learn and have a willingness to try new things. I want to take every opportunity to develop my students' self esteem in a classroom based on mutual respect.
My Project
Did someone ever cut in front of you in line? How did you handle it? Imagine how two kindergartners might handle it. After a bullying issue arises, students will be asked to draw a picture and write about what happened in their journals. The next step in the process is having students talk and listen to each other about what happened. The soft seats provide a comfortable place to sit or lay during the writing portion of this process, and also function as a physical reminder of each student's personal space during the "talk out time" portion of the process. The clipboard gives each student a sturdy surface to write in their journals about the situation that occur. The clipboards also give a sense of the seriousness during the "talk out time". The literature ordered will assist in classroom discussions on stopping bullying. After their story time, my students will write their feelings or a response on bullying in the journals while using the soft seats and clipboards.
Bullying can be a major problem in our schools today, and it seems to start at earlier ages every year.
It starts with verbal and/or physical bullying, and can escalate at later ages to cyber bullying, stalking, and sexual harassment. I want to involve all students in the process of stopping and preventing bullying and harassment. I want to create an environment where all students feel empowered to and responsible for properly handling bullying situations.
