I am a first grade teacher at a Title I school with 70% free and reduced lunch. My students are learning to read and need books to inspire and entertain them.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds including second language students from Central and South America, Africa, and Eastern Europe, mixed families, single parent families, and kids dealing with homelessness and various traumas.
Despite the differences in their backgrounds and abilities, all of my students have the same desire to learn.
My Project
Every year I have students who, even now in the middle of the year, are struggling to become readers. This issue has many components, but one, a big one, is that we don't have very many books at an easy reading level which means my students are reading the same books over and over again and they are bored.
When reading is boring, my students are not motivated to keep trying.
The variety of nonfiction books I am asking for will provide my students with literally hundreds of books to choose from which means they can read new books every day and continue to develop their skills to become the wonderful reader they all have the potential to be.
