Our school is a designated Title I campus, with over two-thirds of our students being English Language Learners. Very few of our students have attended prekindergarten or HeadStart. We are located in a rural town in a small, county-wide school district. Access to food, clean clothes, and other necessities, as well as to technology and school supplies, is drastically limited for my students.
Our Early Childhood/Pre-Kindergarten students come from a high-poverty, diverse community.
Our classes are filled with many students who have not been away from their families until coming to school. The students come eager to learn, but unsure how. Many behavioral challenges are due to not knowing what is expected in a formal school setting.
Due to the socioeconomic levels, we are a Title I school with a high rate of free or reduced-price lunches. We speak many different languages, but all desire to learn no matter the subject.
My Project
Every week we bag up some basic non-perishable food items for students at our school who are in need. These bags go home with them on Fridays and are intended to supplement the food their family should be providing for them. For some of our students, this is the only source of food the entire time they are away from school. Granola bars, canned soup, Chef Boyardee, and apple sauce are only a handful of the items the students prefer the most.
In January of 2020, we are also providing a third (3rd) meal to students right before they get on the bus to go home, but this simply isn't enough food for some of them.
As teachers and educators we have, and still continue to, provide snacks in our classroom as well as additional food for their bags. Our stock is running low, however. We would love to receive these items to send home with our students to keep their bellies full!
