Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

The wonderful students who attend my school are located in an high poverty, urban neighborhood. Many of them live in single parent households with that one parent working two jobs. Others live with grandparents due to unfortunate circumstances through no fault of their own. They have tough lives but still seem to be happy kids. My greatest goal for my students is to create children who desire to read. With this goal, everything else will just fall into place. Without this, they will struggle in many areas throughout life.

My Project

This project, No "Baby" Books For Me, will provide my low level readers with books that look, from a distance, the same as a third grade level chapter book.

We always talk about "chapter books" in third grade, but not all students are ready for that level of reading yet.

My project will put books into my low level readers (levels A-I) in the classroom that look more like chapter books than picture books.

These books will help these students to feel like they fit in third grade and be successful readers. They need to be reading on their level, but sometimes the embarrassment outweighs the motivation.
