The best way to describe my students is a quote from Catherine Pulsifer who said “We are all different, which is great because we are all unique. Without diversity life would be very boring.” As I look over my students I see Caucasians, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asians, and Islanders. I see students who go home to parents, some that go home to uncles and aunts, and some that go to their grandparents. Some of my students live a nice easy life with supporting figures and a path for success, others go home and struggle with the basic needs of food and shelter.
Whatever their case may be, my students are seriously awesome in one thousand ways.
They work hard. They know how to have fun. They succeed together. These kids, especially those that have been dealt some bad cards, come to school wanting authentic learning and they are motivated by it. These students do not want to sit and listen to me, they want to work together and control their own learning.
My Project
In the first project of a series, I want to fill my classroom library with books that will cause an awakening in my students to award winning literature.
With books with titles such "Captain Underpants" and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid", my students are easily distracted from better books.
The books I have chosen are Newberry award winners and the runner ups for the years 2015-2018. With books such as "Hello Universe", "The Girl Who Drank the Moon", and "Last Stop on Market Street".
The Newbery Medal is awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. These books will be a great addition to my growing library.
