My students need materials to aide in the hands-on learning that is required for an anatomy/physiology course. The spirometer, flow meter and volume set are needed for engagement of science content.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning about the anatomy and physiology of the human body is a lost science in urban schools. I have found inherent interest in my students in this course. This class allows many student to fulfill their dream of working in the medical field. I want to to give them the lab experience they deserve.
We serve a population of students in southern California.
Our school is 95% African American. We have class sizes from 25-30. All of our students are interested in learning the curriculum and going on to college. We are a small charter school that focuses on technology, but in science class, there is no substitution for labs and hands on demonstrations.
My Project
Creating learning experiences that are hands on and engaging requires resources. Most schools (including ours) must do more with less. Our students still need and deserve a science curriculum that is both rigorous and effective. Creating the proper environment for science learning is dependent on how much inquiry goes on in the classroom.
I want to create a learning environment that is effective and will encourage my students to investigate and want to explore science more. By having a lab that supplements and encourages questioning by hands on learning, my students can explore anatomy and physiology. The materials that I would like my class to have are: a breathing lab set, an expiration flow monitor, a spirometer, and a literacy enhancement for human body systems.
These resources will allow my class to go beyond simply reading descriptions of how their body functions and explore how they can use the knowledge of the respiratory system to enhance their science literacy.
With these resources, I can overcome the challenge of having boring anatomy/ physiology curriculum that is only lecture-based.
These resources will turn my class into an engaging and inquisitive science course; one that generate science literacy in students.
This lesson is very inquiry-based. It will allow the student to learn about the anatomy of the respiratory system in a way that is fun and engaging. They are many types of labs that can be generated from this activity.
