I am a teacher at Mooresville High School who feels we need to step up our programs in the classroom to bring more ethical educational opportunities to our students. We need to create more teachable moments with our students. We need to help them feel responsibility in order to help them grow into being better individuals, good parents, and humanitarians. I began the search over the summer for a novel with merit and moral responsibility. When I introduced my finding to the English Department and my peers, they were ecstatic. We could not stop talking about the endless possibilities of teaching with the novel, and what kind of impact this could have on our students. The novel we have agreed upon is Night by Elie Wiesel.
Elie Wiesel's Night has grown across the country bringing attention to not only a true story concerning the holocaust, but also how we can impact the moral values of our youth in today's society. We learn from the past to be better people today. The values and opportunities with this novel are far reaching. It is a book which can be applied to our society right at home and be a guide into a global society.
Oprah Winfrey made this one of her club books, and did a heart wrenching interview with Elie Wiesel. She followed with a National High School Essay Contest. Her challenge was for the teens across the United States to read Night and write a 1,000 word essay on how this book, with its many lessons to be learned, can be applied to our society and individuals today.
With this in mind, the English Department at Mooresville High School feels this would be an incredible teaching tool for our freshman. Our goal is to use this teaching unit in the second semester with every freshman reading the novel at the same time. The idea of having all freshman students reading this novel at the same time could be very impactful creating a greater understanding of moral and ethical values, harassment, and discrimination. Of course, this is to create a kinder, gentler humanity.
I have been dedicated to raising the funds to buy all the necessary teaching tools for our staff. I have managed to raise donations from small companies and individuals in the sum of $500, and have received donations via a wish list set up on Amazon.com. However, we are still in need of more novels.
Currently, we need a total of 240 Night novels. I am dividing this proposal into three sections in order to fulfill our needs quickly to be able to reach our goal for second semester implementation.
We have committed ourselves to ensuring our students and parents know who has made donations by placing labels on all products obtained and received. Furthermore, we are planning on using our school broadcast and journalism teams to promote and advertise this endeavor in order to create awareness and appreciation of our contributors.
The freshman teachers are planning to teach this unit at the same time for a larger impact and to promote conversation amongst the mass of students. We have five teachers, and a resource team. The resource team is prepared to help in our endeavor providing additional assistance with the students who need extra help in discussion of our topics and in reading the novel.
Overall, we hope to provide an impactful reading experience for our students. We aim to build and create an educational unit which will bring awareness, deep consideration in thought, and inspiration. Night can show us problems of the past, and help us build better paths in our future by creating kinder, more tolerant, and fair individuals in our society. It can show our youth how to be better leaders and citizens, as well as their ability to reshape our future generations. We feel this can be done by providing the students with an educational experience through Elie Wiesel's Night.
