My Students

My 5th Grade students are engaged, energetic, and highly motivated children. I love the spirit and demonstrated desire to participate in novel reading, research, and writing opportunities! The 5th grade class is intrigued by the many facets of technology, and how it can be incorporated into the classroom setting!

Students at our school love to read a wide variety of genres and respond to them through journal writing!

They are also excited at the prospect of researching on-line, and creating presentations that reflect their knowledge of the presented material, because they know that through research and writing they can collaborate with their peers in meaningful, purposeful ways.

These opportunities for collaboration provide pathways toward higher order thinking! Our students thoroughly enjoy the transformative power of literature and its link to technology in the classroom.

My Project

The 5th grade ELA program can really expand with the introduction of NEW and inspiring, quality literature! My students work on writing and vocabulary development on a daily basis. They are exposed to the very best in literature and specialized vocabulary through access to Newberry award-winners! When planning the reading curriculum, I try to match my students with characters from novels that are approximately the same chronological age, and are challenged by adversity!

The novels I choose contain highly diversified main characters that come from all walks of life, because I want to see my students actively engaging through daily research, writing, and vocabulary development, in order to immerse themselves fully in literature, thereby pursuing a love of reading and writing, which is my ultimate goal as an English/Language Arts educator.
