Although we are one of the top-performing schools in our district, we have a lot of students who look forward to coming to school because it is the only place where they feel accepted for who they are, nurtured, and important. Many do not have books at home. My classroom library is very limited and is in need of literature, fiction, and non-fiction that is relevant to today. Books, for many of us, can be an escape from the realities we might be facing in our own lives. Although my kids are only 9 and 10, this is true for them as well.
My kids come to school each day counting on stability, structure, and a safe environment in which they can learn and thrive.
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My Project
In delving into NGSS, I wanted to add NGSS relevant books to our science library in class. I found some excellent resources: NGSS MS Earth and Space Science- Earth's Systems (4 Books), NGSS MS Life Sciences, and Creativity Meets Curiosity.
Having these resources available in the classroom will allow students to explore the world of life, earth, and the physical sciences.
The donations to this project will help to improve my students' understanding of and competency in authentic, meaningful science and math. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger not only in science, but in reading.
