My students are all unique, caring, and special individuals. They come from a challenging background themselves and still have empathy and compassion for others. What they lack is understanding of some of the world's great issues, and how those relate to themselves.
My school serves a 100% free-and-reduced lunch population, and almost all of my students come from the south-central area of Indianapolis.
Many of my students cannot afford basic supplies like pencils and paper, and my school is constantly looking for innovative ways to afford school supplies and other classroom needs. In the past few years, the leaders and teachers of my school have worked very hard to turn our school around and create a welcoming environment where students are excited to learn!
Regardless of their financial struggles, each of my students comes to class ready to learn. They enjoy engaging with real-world situations and ideas. Helping to broaden their horizons would help them succeed not only in my class but give them background on a variety of social and political issues moving forward in life.
My Project
The novels The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime and The Perks of Being a Wallflower will bring real-world issues to my upperclassmen. Novels is a course that is new to our school, and I would like to make it a fun, but rigorous course that mirrors college-level expectations. In order to do that, I would like to have enough copies of each book to check them out to students. The engaging nature of the subject matter will help to make them responsible for reading at home, and able to participate in discussions and projects in class.
We work hard in our class to ensure that students are prepared for college, and the world - wherever that may take them.
By allowing students to be responsible for their reading, and introducing them to worldly topics, we will further their ability to display autonomy, empathy, intellect, and respect. Coupled with motivating their academic success, we hope that our students will be not only better students, but also better human beings.
