Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is an open-enrollment, public charter school system serving students in grades six through twelve, in Houston’s most underserved communities. Ninety-five percent of my students are either Hispanic or African-Americans.
My amazing students are in desperate need of musical instruments for our Music Class and AP Music.
In class, my students learn about Music Theory, History, and Aesthetics. This project will help us with the electronic materials needed and additional instruments, since each class is 30 students. This way, they will have more opportunities to learn, practice rhythm, and play songs learned in class independently and to create songs. Currently, in each class, every time we use keyboards, up to three students share the same piano at the same time. Help us create music!
During August 2017, our County was hugely impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Eighty-five percent of my students' homes were impacted in some way. We are still on the path to recovery from the trauma, and my class is the opportunity for them to find relief and express their feelings through music.
My Project
In the music theory and AP Music theory classroom, students learn about the rules of Western Music and composition. We put into practice these rules by creating songs and performing in class.
Currently, we are exploring the orchetra instrument family, and while we have electric keyboards in the classroom, we do not have any percussion instruments.
This makes it almost impossible for them to have a real-life experience with percussion instruments. This electric mallet station provides different sounds and instruments that we can set up to successfully introduce the percussion family.
I'd give everything to my students, and since they saw this online, they have been asking me to bring this to our classroom! I cannot wait to see them use this instrument and explore the use of technology in the music classroom!
