Each day I welcome 22 curious minds into our classroom. They are filled with passion, enthusiasm, an eagerness to grow and learn. They are always ready to collaborate and share their learning with each other. Today’s students seek a learning experience that is different from the traditional classroom. The students are the center of the classroom and I facilitate learning in a number of different ways. The students are progressive, energetic and ready to try new things. The flexible seating concept will undoubtedly reinforce these dynamic characteristics and help empower and prepare the students for tomorrow’s world.
My Project
As the world changes around us, the design of tomorrow’s classroom must also respond to new ways or learning. I strive to create a classroom climate which is conducive to learning. My students feel welcome, valued, and supported each day. While I have the tools necessary to build a caring community of learners, I am in need of more seating choices to build an authentic, responsive environment that reflects the real world. I have researched flexible seating, and it is clear that allowing seating choices increases student engagement and participation and decreasing negative behaviors. By adapting the classroom to children’s learning styles and moods, I am confident student achievement will increase. Choosing where to work gives students control of their learning environment and enables them to find academic success on their own terms. I have begun the transformation by replacing many student desks with tables of varying styles and heights. I have also replaced student chairs with different types of seating including cushioned stools and benches, computer chairs, yoga balls, and comfortable butterfly chairs. I have personally purchased all of the alternate seating choices to date, but would greatly appreciate your support in purchasing wobble chairs and comfy floor seats. The wobble chairs will give students a place to sit and work while simultaneously releasing energy. The seats are known to improve attention and focus as well as posture. The comfy floor seats are an alternative to sitting on the carpet. They have an adjustable cushioned back support and can be used anywhere in the classroom.
