My students come from very diverse backgrounds with varying degrees of world experience. They speak different languages, share unique cultures, and many of them are socioeconomically challenged. There is an atmosphere of sharing and learning from each other that permeates our school community.
The students are eager, curious, and inquisitive: everything you want in a budding scientist or engineer!
They always come to the science lab classroom ready to learn something new. There is just something about seeing the light of future possibility in their eyes that pushes me to find new and meaningful learning experiences for them. Watching my students work hard to gain the knowledge they need to master science and engineering skills, often without the appropriate tools, is inspirational.
My Project
My students are genuinely excited about the newly adopted Next Generation Science Standards and are eager to try, explore, and engage in new ways to think about and solve scientific questions and problems as well as invent new ways to improve the world around them. However, new district purchased science curriculum is still several years out. This aligned building blocks Earth and space science unit will provide up to 29 lessons that allow students to explore how Earth is both part of a larger system and is itself composed of interconnected systems.
Through hands-on lessons, my students will gain experiences with modeling, scale, and cause-and-effect relationships.
Students will be able to work independently, in pairs, in small groups, and on larger teams throughout the unit. And this resource is non-consumable and will benefit 5th graders coming to the science lab classroom well beyond this year! Your investment plays an important role in creating the appropriate learning environment for our future scientists and engineers.
