My students need this new laptop so that we can fully utilize our classroom Smartboard and projector. The 2003 desktop I am currently using is so outdated it can no longer update the SmartNotebook software.
I teach in a small rural community. Our school district has a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students. (Around 65% of our student population qualifies for free or reduced hot lunch.) Many of my students do not have access to computers or internet at home. So, what I am able to provide for them at school is for many, their limited experience with today's technology.
They come to school eager to learn and ready for new challenges.
I have had the privilege of teaching in the same community for an entire generation. This year I have nicknamed my class the "next gen" class. I have 5 students whose parents I taught in school! They are fun students and are the first of a group of students in our building to dive into personalized learning. This means that we are teaching them at the academic level they are at not their physical age. These trailblazers are using technology to demonstrate their learning as well as document skills they are proficient in. They are the first group of students to have full access to their grade profiles to be able to set their own learning goals.
My Project
With this laptop, my students will be able to fully utilize the capabilities of the SmartBoard and projector that I already have. My current computer is outdated and failing. Our technology budget is limited and the best the district has been able to provide me with is a rebuilt desktop that is from 2003. I needed to use a paperclip to manually open the DVD when we were showing educational videos this year!
With the 2 in 1 laptop, my students will finally be able to share presentations they are creating on their own devices and present them on the Smartboard; allowing us to practice our speaking skills needed in today's world.
This new laptop will also allow me to use newer software available to improve my lessons and bring content to life for my students.
