Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My first graders enjoy flipping through my Sunday edition of the New York Times with me, especially the Travel section! But one day, my most curious student asked me, "Why don't they make newspapers for first graders?" Well, this thoughtful student's teacher says, "They DO make newspapers for first graders, BUT we have to pay for them!" My students live in really challenging conditions: over priced rentals in under appropriate buildings, scattered gang violence in their neighborhood, and often absent parental figures. I can't ask my students to pay for a weekly newspaper for themselves and I also can't afford to pay the cost on a yearly basis. But how great it would be if someone else would like to humor my curious student and buy some newspapers for my young learners!
