My classroom serves students with the highest levels of behavioral and emotional needs (EBD) in a large, diverse, urban district.
Students attend this program because their behaviors present a danger to themselves or to others, and these behaviors have had a profoundly negative impact on their academic performance.
We are a small, self-contained site with a very high teacher-student ratio. Our families primarily live in the surrounding urban, low-income community and struggle with issues such as generational poverty, homelessness, addiction, instability and neighborhood violence. Our student population is 90% non-white, approximately 10% of our students are homeless/highly mobile and 99% of our families receive free or reduced price lunch.
My Project
I am requesting subscriptions each to Scholastic News and TIME For Kids magazine for my students to stay up-to-date with current events and practice reading nonfiction text. We will dive into these magazines every week to learn about what is happening in the world, intriguing science topics, and important historical events. These magazines provide grade level and age-appropriate material at my students' reading level. My students will also be able to practice reading nonfiction text, which is its own skillset. Having these magazines in the classroom will bring the real world into school at an appropriate level for my students.
