This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students love coming to class where they feel like a family. Each student has a job to do each week to encourage a sense of community in the classroom. They are a diverse group of students that include ESL, at risk and inclusion students.
I teach at a Title I school in Southern Virginia and our entire district has qualified for free breakfast and lunch.
My students love to work in groups and complete hands on activities. I strive to put more books and functional texts in to their hands to increase their stamina and reading ability. With the proper materials their learning potential is ENDLESS!
My Project
In a time when students are being asked to strive higher it is difficult to find nonfiction and instructional text that interests students and is on their level. Scholastic news offers a grade level specific magazine where each student is able to have a copy of a nonfiction article. There articles include text features and information related to science and social studies topics. There is also an online component that is free with the subscription to the magazine that has videos, games and teacher guides to enhance the learning.
My students need interesting content, on their grade level to help them become more fluent readers and encourage them to explore science and history.
If I can foster a love of reading in my students by getting nonfiction text on their level into their hands they will be more successful this year.
