My Students

I am a fourth grade teacher at a Title I school located in the heart of Portland. Our school is made up of diverse learners from around the world. Many of my students are refugees and asylees who come from war-torn parts of the world. Others are native Mainers who struggle with generational poverty.

Through Expeditionary Learning, with an emphasis on character education, our school is very successful at graduating students ready to not just survive, but thrive in the 21st century.

My Project

Scholastic News are very high-quality news magazines that I have used in the past years of teaching. They present real and powerful stories, engaging information that kids are interested in, and helpful text features like bold key words and glossaries. Students love it when the current issue comes in the mail. We will use it in class for building our reading skills and for great social studies discussions. Each issue comes with a "Debate of the Week" that presents two sides of an issue (like school uniforms) from real kids who have written in. We will write our opinions, as well, and submit them online, where we can compare thinking to the other students around the country who also read Scholastic News.

Our Future Americans must know HOW to read the news, think critically about it, and take action steps when they can.

The best way to teach our young people to do this is to provide them with high-quality current event news magazines, like Scholastic News. Please help us get a class year-long subscription!
