My special needs students are a creative and active group of learners. They have various disabilities and a majority are from low income families. My students have physical and behavioral challenges that affect their ability to do their best on their academics. Sometimes they become frustrated with how hard they work toward their goals and how long it takes to achieve them. I am always looking for new ways to excite them about learning.
Scholastic News and Science Spin will bring interesting current events into the classroom each week.
My students' reading levels range from just connecting sounds with letters to reading on a third grade level. Most of my students need direct, frequent and intense reading instruction to make progress. They need to experience concepts from many different angles over multiple sessions. Despite their multiple challenges, they are ALL learning to read. Weekly Readers would be an enormous support in their development.
My Project
As a teacher my job is to find new ways to encourage my students to read. Exciting, colorful magazines coming into our classroom throughout the year will be so much fun for my students and increase their opportunities to read. Then as a bonus my students will be able to bring the magazines home and share them with their families.
Nonfiction is often challenging for students to read and comprehend.
These magazines will give my students the chance to read nonfiction that is current and engaging. My students will read real world science information. These magazines help support multiple subjects at the same time. Students are developing reading skills. There are always reading comprehension activities within each issue that are captivating and engaging. Science and social studies lessons are a central part of the magazine. These magazines support the national and state curriculum. This project will bring the world into our classroom for my students to explore. Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal.
