Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our middle school is located in Jersey City, New Jersey. Over 850 students in grades 6-8 attend the school. About 75% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
Our student population is very diverse.
About 30 different languages are spoken within the student body, including Spanish, Gujarati, Tagalog, and French.
I am one of two music teachers at the school. I teach general music to 27 different homerooms per week. Throughout the school year, students in general music have the opportunity to try out different instruments, such as the keyboard, guitar, and xylophone. Students also have the chance to participate in activities during general music class such as DJing and bucket drumming.
My Project
The New York Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the most renowned orchestras in the world. In addition to their normal programming, the orchestra offers concerts tailored for young audiences each season. These concerts educate students about music and nurture a lifelong love of music and concert attendance. The “Young People’s Concerts” explore different themes each year. The theme of this year’s “Young People’s Concert” is “Music as a Change Agent.” During the show, students will hear repertoire that has sparked change in societies.
The New York Philharmonic Orchestra is sure to inspire my students to continue developing their music performance skills.
This project will give 1 homeroom of students that study general music with me the opportunity to attend the New York Philharmonic’s “Young People’s Concert” in New York City on Wednesday, March 18, 2020.
This interactive educational concert is sure to impress the young musicians and be an experience they will remember forever.
