I teach high school Civics and Economics, and we start every day with the Pledge of Allegiance. We analyze and discuss the functions of our government. I want my students to understand how wonderful democracy can be and how it functions. We also look at how immigration and other countries have influenced us.
I have a diverse group of students from many ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses.
They are all between the ages of 15 and 16 years old. They are eager to learn and curious. They ask a lot of in-depth questions.
The school is in a rural setting that was hit hard with job loss. Many of my students have never traveled out of the state and this field trip to New York City will be a once-in-a-lifetime trip for them.
My school is small with around 600 students. The teachers here care about our students. The idea for the trip came about because the students wanted to see the 9-11 Memorial and the Statue of Liberty. The class will also visit the Natural Science and History museum. I take them to local places but have never planned an out-of-state trip. So I agreed, and the smiles on their faces and excitement was contagious. The trip has people in the community, families, and staff excited.
My Project
The funding will help with the transportation, lodging, and food. A wish list would include a show on Broadway. The students will visit the 9-11 memorial, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, and Times Square to name a few. The students will be exposed to an environment they have never been in to allow them to stretch their imaginations and dream big.
Field trips give students a break from a regular classroom schedule and awaken their anticipation which is a key to learning. Field trips give students new appreciation for learning as it entices their curiosity.
Field trips enrich the lives and experiences of the students by taking classic rote learning into the real world.
Field trips give students opportunities to use all their senses as they get to hear, see, touch and experience the world around them. A museum field trip helps students visualize what they've been learning in 3-D models and real artifacts. This will be an educational experience that they will remember forever. My hope is that it will make them lifelong learners.
