My students need basic supplies such as pencils, glue sticks, and highlighters to maintain their interactive social studies notebooks and to be academically successful on a day-to-day basis.
As is typical of eighth graders, our students are alternately sweet and angsty, energetic and idle, serious and silly. But above all, they are eager for engaging learning experiences and positive attention.
Our school is located in a richly diverse community and our social studies classrooms benefit from the range of perspectives and experiences that students bring to school.
Approximately sixty percent come from low-income families and are eligible for free or reduced price meals. Many have experienced trauma and are behind several reading levels The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent in our classrooms.
However, despite these challenges, they are curious about the world around them and eager to learn. To provide our students with the best possible chance of succeeding academically in middle school and beyond, we strive to provide learning experiences that challenge their perceptions and engage them in history, geography, politics, and social justice.
My Project
Routines are important in maintaining a smooth, safe, comfortable environment in a middle school classroom. The basic supplies we are requesting will help our students to maintain the classroom routines we have established, including their interactive Social Studies notebooks that they have used since the beginning of the year. For example, students frequently use gluesticks to attach new activities into their notebooks and highlighters to mark different parts of their paragraphs to work on their writing structure.
Donations to this project will help our classrooms to run smoothly and will reduce the financial strain on our school to provide basic supplies that students and their families often cannot afford.
Thank-you for considering a contribution to this simple, yet important project!
