Help me give my students poster board and multi color paint daubers, as well as bright colored folders and clean slate composition books to support students' focus on “...in with the new” mindsets.
Our school's student body of approximately 700 seventh and eighth-grade students is comprised of 42% Filipino, 22% Native Hawaiian, and a mix of Japanese, Samoan, Hispanic, White, and Black students. We also service many military families, and we know that they have a specific set of needs that are vital to address. Approximately 50% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch and are considered "at-risk" by the State of Hawaii - making it critical that we engage and support this population, helping them to believe in themselves and their ability to apply their education to real-world situations.
My students' energy and enthusiasm is contagious; after all these years, I still get a thrill when one of them has that "ah-ha" moment of wonder and determination when they have just mastered a new skill!
They come from such diverse backgrounds and ability levels, yet face many common challenges. They amaze me daily with their perseverance, their wondering nature, and their excitement on setting future goals. Our focus is learning about their role in society, for now and the future. I am certain that I learn as much from them as they do from me!
My Project
New Year, New Lessons, New Opportunities! This time of year is tailor made for “fresh starts” and coming back from winter break, I would love to have new composition books and folders for all my students to begin the 2nd semester. This will allow them to record their thoughts and organize their learning. Later in the semester, we will be creating posters to share at community events that showcase my students new financial literacy skills!
I have requested poster board and multi color paint daubers, as well as bright colored folders and clean slate composition books to support my students' focus on “...in with the new” mindsets.
By offering fresh, new classroom materials, I hope the students gather their second wind during this most unusual school year. They have weathered the back to school jitters and are doing a wonderful job of keeping each other safe, physically and emotionally. These materials will be building blocks to support their next steps. We have much to learn, share and create!
