Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is classified as a Title I campus. This means the majority of our students are economically disadvantaged. Most students are on free/reduced price lunch plans and often do not come to school with necessary supplies. Our demographics are split roughly 65% Hispanic, 30% African-American, and 5% other races.
My classroom is comprised of bilingual/ESL students, and many of our families only speak Spanish, emphasizing the barrier to a world of opportunity and experiences.
The parents of my students try their best but often cannot help students due to their own language and educational background.
Our community is by no means affluent, and most students do not come to school prepared. Despite this, my students are eager to learn and crave the structured environment school provides. This group of children is deserving of every chance they can get to have a fun, engaging, organized space.
My Project
My students continue to show growth each and every day, both academically and emotionally. With these materials, I can organize the classroom and provide incentives that will further their desire to come to school.
My students deserve for school to be a fun, safe environment to explore and learn.
I know they will be more productive and eager to engage if they come to school without the worry of needing a pencil. We need organizers for class materials, flexible seating options including kick bands, and a dry erase easel
Something as simple as allowing students to sit on a rug during whole group instruction has changed their behavior for the better. I can imagine giving them the opportunity to sit on ottomans or use the kick bands at their desks will work wonders.
