Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher at a Title One school near Chicago. I have a group of twelve, rambunctious kindergartners. They love to read, write, sing, dance and play. Some of our favorite books are the Pete the Cat books. The kids love to sing along and read the books independently.
Many of my students do not have books or educational materials at home to practice their target academic skills at home with parents.
About half of my class are bilingual and Spanish speaking at home, and a majority of my students are living in low income homes as well. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom, but they always come in to school excited and ready to learn.
My Project
My students need some new books they can read at their level. Included in this project are both fiction and non fiction readers that we will use to focus on sight word and fluency practice.
My students love to read and are growing into stronger readers everyday; however, we do not have enough books in our library for their reading levels.
Students will use these books everyday. They each have book bins that they use every week. They choose what books they want to read based on interest and reading level. Students are learning their sight words and the fiction and nonfiction sight word readers provided, will help students with their reading fluency.
