My students need books that they are itching to read, including If I Stay, The Maze Runner, and graphic novels.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At the beginning of class on Wednesday, one of my sixth-graders put his book on his desk and announced, "I read this book at home last night." For the first time, this student with a third-grade reading level chose to read on his own. With the right book, every kid in class could get there!
The students in my room are hilarious, hard-working, and hopeful.
This year, each of them has set a goal to become a better reader in some way; many of them aim to catch up to their grade level in reading despite being two or three grades away from that goal. My students know how to ask for what they need, too!
"We need new books, Miss."
"I want more of the comic books."
"Can you get more books about cars?"
My room is part of a farming community off the beaten path, a community where it can be hard to find the resources to give the kids what they are asking for. As the students learn and set their goals higher, they have more to give back to the supportive and loving community of which they are part.
My Project
My biggest hope for these books is that they won't just be used in the classroom. I hope these books are used everywhere: in the bleachers during a basketball game, in the car on a trip to the cities, in the students' homes and favorite hangout spots. With the books that they've requested and truly want to read, students will be excited to take reading with them everywhere and make it a part of their lives in and out of the classroom.
As their teacher, I love it when students all have their noses in a book during silent reading time, but it excites me far more when I see evidence that students are becoming lifetime readers. I love it when students pick out a book they love from the shelf, but I'm so much more proud when students advocate for their needs.
I could list a thousand reasons why my students need to read more. It will help with every test. It will make them better citizens. It will give them power. They deserve these skills and these resources.
Every day during reading, students ask me to help them find books that I just don't have yet.
These aren't the students who have have their noses in a book during reading time. They're the students who reluctantly grab a book when I urge them to get reading. These are students who haven't found their home-run book yet--the book that they'll love so much that they'll keep picking books up to find another just as good. We can change that by putting the right book in their hands.
