My students need folders and composition books because they are required to complete a daily warm-up activities which teaches them to utilize their notes, classwork as well as improving their communication by explain key concepts. They also need the folders to keep their daily warm-ups, classwork along with tracking their grades.
A typical day in my classroom begins with the students getting their folders and getting started on a warm-up activity. This is an individual timed activity that students will need to utilize their previous work to complete. After the class completes and discusses the warm up, students will then work either individually, in pairs or in groups to complete the days task. This could be any thing from discussing to notes to dissecting and owl pellets to designing a model car with limited resources. The folders and notebooks will allow them to keep track their work as well as a way for them to track their grades.
I teach in a lower economic urban high school.
Students come in with very little prior knowledge about science and the word around them. They are very challenging for they have a hard time seeing how they can and do affect their environment. Though once the student can identify with any part of science, they are usually hooked for the rest of the year.
My Project
The materials requested will be utilized in several ways. The posters will be used as resources throughout the year. Posters in my class are not just on the wall to cover space. They are used as reference materials and often students will ask to reference them while completing classwork and/or labs. The folders are used in two ways. The first is for me to communicate their current up-to-date grades. At the end of every week, they receive a classwork and warm-up grade on the inside of their folder as well as side notes from me like "great improvement" or "see me for make up work". Another way that the folders are used is for students to keep track of their work so its not lost in a locker or at home. The composition books are used for note taking, warm-ups, explaining demonstrations, informative assessments etc. The large post-it paper is used for many things. Its used for groups to explain concepts, for groups create charts and graphs, it also used from teacher and student led brain storming sessions.
Donations for this project will take provide additional resources in a school district were resources are scarce.
Students will not start the new year having to worry about supplies. It will allow groups to work together will having to skimp on materials which lowers classroom moral.
