Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are middle schoolers at a Title I school in New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many from tough homes. They are overcoming social and emotional barriers each day to receive an education.
My students are active and enthusiastic.
They are motivated and eager to do well. They want to learn and are constantly seeking opportunities to take ownership of their learning.
Our school is in a high needs and high poverty area in which most children are on free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs. My students work hard despite the challenges they face. Many students stay after school, participate in after-school clubs and activities and are always striving to be, and do, better for themselves and for others.
My Project
As we approach a new school year, I want us to be organized, I want us to have great books, and I want us to have a welcoming classroom space. I also want to have the tools to be current with my practice, as well as maximizing my students' learning.
These resources will assist us all in making the most of the upcoming school year.
The folders will allow us to organize our work. Being organized is an important skill for incoming 6th graders to have and I want us to start right away with being organized. The books selected will appeal to the diversity in my class. It is important for students to see themselves in the stories that they are reading, or to learn empathy through the various stories that they will have access to. In order for students to appreciate books and to enjoy reading, they need to have access to interesting books. The lamp will allow for the creation of our reading nook. The heavy duty magnets will allow for the ease of displaying student work and keeping our learning current by being able to post and change charts as we move throughout our units. The professional book requested will allow me to infuse more fun in my teaching and I believe that this book will be helpful in doing just that. The Play-Doh will allow me to make learning more tactile for students. The bins and stackable shelves will allow me to organize their folders and our books. The microphones will allow student presentations to be heard, as well as when we are filming their projects. The presentation clicker will allow me to show content and navigate the room.
