New Ways To See: Wireless LCD And Screen For English Class
My students need an interactive whiteboard to revise and comment on their writing. A wireless LCD connected to my iPad or doc cam router can help accomplish that.
I teach 5 AP English classes daily. Reading, writing, discussing, and listening are key components to success in my classes. Interaction is the key. A student can't just learn in one modality. They need to see beyond their own work. They need to learn from one another to move forward.
My group of students are as diverse as the city they call home.
The high school where I am privileged to work has more than 3,000 students. I have students whose parents teach at the local university. I have just as many students who are on free-and-reduced lunch. Thus, I do not teach the typical AP English class. I differentiate every day to ensure that every student meets his or her potential. Small-group work, large-group work - I don't want my students to merely listen to me lecture all day long.
My Project
I have an IPEVO document camera with a wireless router. On my iPad I have an app which creates an IPEVO virtual whiteboard. It allows me to do a live feed or take a photo of a student's work and make highlights for all to see. However, this router does not work well with my Apple TV. I can use this wireless LCD projector as a dedicated server to highlight my student's writing in a big way. With the portable 16:9 screen, I can enlarge students' work for easier vision. I can hand my iPad directly to a student and they point out where they can revise or correct the work they or their group have created.
The key is this: if they can enter in a conversation about what they are doing right and how they can correct their steps, then that will make the work I do with them that much more meaningful. Simply put: it will not be just me showing them what they have done. They can show me, and each other, what they have done, and take ownership of that.
My goal as an English teacher is to get my students ready to write on that first day of college.
This year I am teaching juniors and seniors. That first day of college is still an abstraction for them. For me it is a concrete, tangible thing. I love to teach writing because I love to see how students develop their process of thinking. In order to think, they need to see. If they can see the world around them, then they can make this world a better place for all of us.
