My students come from a rural area where the majority of families work in the farming industry and by default, many of my students do as well. They are very hard workers who strive to do well in school as well as help their families once they get home or go straight to work.
We have had a great deal of trauma occur in our little town in recent years that has directly affected our students and they need a way to come together through game play and also have time to decompress during the school day by doing yoga, practicing mindfulness and experiencing guided meditation.
I am working to rebuild a PE program that has had a lot of turnover. My students have expressed their desire to play flag football (we do not have a football team and this will be a great addition to our team sports classes).
There has also been an overwhelming response to the idea of introducing yoga into our PE classes.
Our students have requested lessons on mindfulness and relaxation and I want to offer this to them during the day. My goal with this is to help students learn stress management techniques that they can use at any point during the day. With the amount of screen time our kids have I want them to have at least one period during the day where they can take a break from it and tune into what they need.
