Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine how much you would enjoy math when it comes alive through videos, on-line practice, and engaging activities! There is even a video tutor to help struggling students.
Our students are city kids with various economic backgrounds.
Many do not have access to the Internet at home. Many have limited English proficiency, having just moved here from various countries throughout the world. We are a public school about 90 years old and very large (800-900 students). We just became wireless for this school year, so we are slowly becoming technologically up-to-date. It takes a long time to make changes in our building due to the availability of electricians and such. Our students are motivated and energetic. They deserve to have the same opportunities as suburban schools.
My Project
Our district just purchased a new mathematics program, which includes many Internet activities. With this i-pad I will be able to use the e-book to teach lessons, many of which include videos, demonstrations, interactive math tools, interactive whiteboard activities, on-line quizzes, etc. These strategies make math come alive for students, whether they are visual, auditory or tactile learners. Math should be fun and engaging. The i-pad will guide students through lessons, giving them the opportunity to use the interactive technology. Also, having the i-pad will allow me to practice the technology in advance with better proficiency. With so much emphasis on the Common Core Standards, it is important that students develop complete understanding of the math concepts through exploration and problem solving. The i-pad allows for students to engage in creative and higher order thinking skills through creative learning strategies.
In a technological world such as this one, if a teacher does not utilize as many teaching strategies as possible, learning can be a struggle.
I am fortunate to have some equipment (document reader, projector). With the addition of the i-pad, students can better utilize the new e-book math series we are implementing this year. With it there are so many engaging and interactive resources that would be included in lessons, leading to more rigorous student learning.
