My school is located in Camden, NJ. The school has a large Hispanic population and contains a large English learner population. The majority of the students qualify for free breakfast, lunch and after school snack. My class is energetic, creative and respectful. They make everyday an adventure. This year, in our class, we have a heavy focus on developing literacy. We spend many minutes a day becoming better readers and writers. Many of these students have not yet gained the love of reading so I hope this helps them develop a new passion. I realize this is common, but the majority of our students are new to the United States and mostly come from South America. They are just taking the first steps in learning the English Language.
Many of our students are just not new to our school, but new to our country. These students come to school with little or no supplies because of many factors not knowing that they are needed or for economic reasons. These pencils will be used for these students to complete their work in all the major classroom subjects - math, language arts, science and history.
These pencils seem like something little, but it's a gateway to becoming part of our new country.
When a student comes from a new country they are dealing with many difficulties such as navigating their new city and learning a new language. Let's make something so simple, simple.
