Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm the half time librarian at an "under-performing" middle school that is under state sanctions for a two year period. We did well last year and can get out from the state program if we do well this year. Recreation reading helps students to enjoy their time in school and gives them free choice to pursue their interests. This helps their reading improve. The more they read, the better their reading becomes.
Students bring books to their classrooms for SSR - Sustained Silent Reading. They come to the library to check out books for this free reading time, when the whole class including teacher is quiet and reading. They need to see books that will appeal to their interests.
School libraries in San Francisco have not recieved funds for new books for almost two years. Students need to see new books that they will be interested in reading. I have no money to buy multiple copies of the new Harry Potter or the new Lemony Snicket. I have not been able to replace books that are worn out from wear because the students love reading them. I bought the Bluford series which has Afro-American characters(Townsend Press) for a dollar a book and they flew off the shelves. The students will really appreciate a fresh infusion of new books and I hope you can help them learn to love to read.
