Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
With technology budgets being cut left and right, my students and I know we're lucky to be at our Arts and Technology college-prep high school for first generation college-bound students. But, this year our supplies budget has been slashed even more.
My students come from families who are hoping to see their children be the first to graduate from college.
As their Digital Media Arts teacher, I am charged with the task of designing rigorous, college-prep projects that also inspire the creative, technical, and critical minds of my students. They have taken a risk to attend our ground breaking new school and we are in need of support to keep technology and the arts central in our school. Our community is growing, our wait-list is expanding, our test scores are rising, and the future is looking bright for my students. We are leaders in project based learning, authentic assessment, and technology integration. Other school leaders and students constantly visit our little campus to see the gains our students prove through their application of technology, science, math, and the humanities at our blockbuster exhibition nights. Then, students head into the real world as interns to test their skills in labs, offices, and schools.
My Project
The exciting prospect of becoming a "Chevron Classroom Challenge" winning classroom and school is the inspiration for the project described here. It is my hope that the materials I am requesting will facilitate and inspire the production of both digital and print media that my students will create in order to demonstrate their knowledge of AP Environmental Science, AP Government, and Digital Media. Students will create authentic public service announcement posters and advertisements that will inform their community of real political and environmental issues. They will then present their work to the community with the hopes of affecting local policy and opinion. But, we currently have no way of printing these posters or getting their work off the screens and onto the walls. A large format inkjet printer, ink cartridges, large format paper, a paper cutter, x-acto cutters, and cutting mats will bring their work to life. In addition, if selected as a Chevron Classroom Challenge award winning school, we will continue to expand the use of technology to keep it R.E.A.L. (Reach and Engage All Learners).
With your support I am confident that my students will receive an equitable education and a real shot at college success.
This empowering process will not only encourage greater civic and scientific involvement, but will also facilitate the development of college-going habits and skills that will allow my students to successfully make their way through college and become the first in their family to graduate. Thank you for your support.
