Help me give my students an accessible and motivating learning environment next year. I will be creating a Medically Fragile K-4th grade unit this fall. With your help, I can create an appropriate setting that is motivating.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are all placed in a medically fragile primary unit, grades K-4th. Their disabilities include Cerebral Palsy, deaf/blind/non-verbal, Cortical Visual Impairments, Muscular Dystrophy, Dravet Syndrome, and Autism. All of the children are in wheelchairs, and they are all currently mostly non-verbal.
Despite their disabilities and challenges, they all strive to grow and learn each day.
I am continually amazed by their determination and resolve to perform the most basic skills that most take for granted. They have a work ethic that is inspirational, and watching them push past their limitations to learn new skills is my joy!
Most of these students were taught by me in preschool and this next school year, I am moving up to the primary unit to fill a vacancy that was left for the upcoming 20/21 school year.
My Project
These materials will be used to set up a new learning space for Medically Fragile students in grades K-4. I have decided to take this position for the upcoming school year, after teaching Medically Fragile preschool for the past four years. In addition, I lead a preschool Autism unit for 11 years before moving into the world of children with medical needs. While I enjoy working with most populations of students, this older unit is much harder to staff because of the required lifting, so I decided to move into this position, knowing that the district I work for would have a much easier time at filling the preschool Medically Fragile position, that I am leaving behind. I am excited to embark on this new journey, but it will be a lot of work and require many resources to get this unit up and running. That is where you can help to make a huge difference!
