I teach social studies to 13-20-year-olds with a variety of intellectual, emotional and behavioral disorders. Although my students have different abilities they are all required to pass the NYS global and U.S. regents exam to graduate.
The majority of the students live on campus or are from low-income inner-city households.
Some of these students have been placed in foster care due to neglect or traumatic home experiences. 95% of our school population receive free or reduced lunch. As a result, our school and our classrooms promote a more therapeutic environment for students to learn and grow.
My students are brilliant individuals who want to succeed. In order for my students to grow academically, socially, and mentally they require a more individualized approach. My students need access to supplies to help ease their anxiety in the classroom and to provide them with learning experiences that will help them to become successful members of society.
My Project
These basic school supplies will help my students in learning and immersing themselves in the study of history. These basic supplies are not so easily obtained by many of my students. Since many of my kids come from low-income families they struggle to afford or replace school supplies. Although I do my best to provide such materials for my students, I do not always have the time and means to buy the materials my students need in order to succeed. Having this project funded would go a long way and my kids can start the new year strong.
My students and I will use the supplies daily in our quest to learn about the story of mankind.
The pens and lined paper will be used for the kids to take notes, annotate documents, and construct essays. By having access to pens and paper the students, not myself will not have to spend time looking for materials but can use the time to complete history related tasks.
The astrobright paper and the laminating paper will be used for social studies centers. The astrobright paper will be used for vocabulary centers in which students can learn and recall new words by completing vocabulary sort activities. The laminating paper will be used for pictures and task sheets for students to examine throughout various lessons.
All of the supplies will go toward my students having a productive and successful year.
