Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third graders are curious, creative, and hungry for knowledge. They are avid readers, writers, and mathematicians who come to school each day excited to learn. They are resilient and dedicated learners who embody a level of joy that inspires me constantly. My classroom is full of diversity, with students who have recently moved to Oakland from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Yemen as well as students whose family histories go back to the early development of Oakland as a city.
Our school is a Title I public elementary school in Oakland.
57% of our school's students are English-language learners. 95% of students are at or near the poverty line, receiving subsidized or reduced-price lunches. All of our students are brilliant and inspiring young people with a world of opportunity ahead of them.
My Project
When students walk into their new 3rd grade class in just a few weeks, having new and sturdy daily supplies will make a huge difference in their excitement towards learning. Book bags are one thing that students use every single day to bring their books from school to home and back so that they can keep them in top shape. Students also use storage caddies every day with their table teams to practice organizational skills and teamwork in sharing and distributing supplies like markers, glue, and scissors to their teammates. My class will also be thrilled to use a pocket chart to practice new instructional strategies I learned this summer in professional development such as creating a whole class paragraph and editing our work by moving the sentence strips to different parts of the chart. While many of these supplies may seem small, they are absolutely essential to the daily operations that make learning happen in my classroom!
