Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities.
My students are in a self contained classroom for students with significant disabilities.
They learn using an alternate curriculum, alternate standards, and are assessed using an alternate test. This year we are combining 2 classrooms to make better use of classroom staff and to group students in grades 1-5 in a more meaningful way. It is going to be a huge change, but we hope to see bigger gains with our students because of the student/staff ratio.
My Project
Most of my students' families do not have the income to spend on basic school supplies. Year after year, I supply what I can. Year after year though, what I can supply is less and less.
The supplies I requested will give my students a great start with their own work, as well as allow for meaningful organization that will benefit my students.
Markers, pencils, and glue sticks will help my students complete their daily assignments. Printer ink, labels, and storage bins will allow me to create picture symbol labels so students can quickly identify supplies in cabinets, increasing their independence. Tissues will help hygienic practices, which will keep students healthy, and allow them to improve illness related attendance.
